Yeah I hate it when they do it but if they want to put themselves through that much torture for that little bit of money then it is their right. I wouldn't shoot a wedding for less than $1500, no prints just a CD. But then again, I don't shoot weddings

its kinda like if everybody started selling clean ek hatchs with fresh paint for $1000 and you had your car up for sale. or since you paint cars it would be like me offering to do body work, prime, paint and shoot 3 coats of clear on any car and do it right for 250 bucks.

the average price to hire a photographer for a wedding around atlanta is 1500-5000. $1500 is a great deal, for the people that have shot a wedding know its VERY difficult, you have no re-dos, people are running everywhere all crazy and stressed and you have to get good photos of them plus you have to resize and edit atleast 500 pictures. doing that for 500 bucks hurts all the photographers that do shoot weddings just like how it would hurt you if i sold a clean freshly painted ek hatch for a grand

i see what your saying but if he wants to go thru all the trouble for $500.00 then let him. like you said about painting a car for $250.00. if someone wants to do all the work for that little bit, thats on him/her. i would not do it but i would not be mad. there's always someone cheaper and better but thats just life. the way your pictures look. you should be doing it for a living.

Ok, perfect example. You said he should be doing it for a living so let me present a real world scenario.

You are planning a wedding and have alloted $1500 for the photographer but during the initial ordering your fiance blew the budget for something and you have to make the money up somewhere. You have looked at Chad's work and like it and his price for a basic wedding shooting only the ceremony is $1500 and includes 500 images edited on a cd ready for print. She finds a photog on CL that will shoot the entire wedding and reception all day and include all the shots with prints, a cd, and an album for $500. The CL photogs shots are "OK" where as Chads shots are "Very Good". Which one do you think will get the job?

not me!!! that happens alot, my little sister spent to much on flowers or some bullshit and were not able to hire the photographer they had talked to at $1500. i ended up coming in doing wedding for a manfrotto 055xpro and compact ballhead if she didnt have me she would have been looking for that $500 wedding photographer

seams like we have this same discussion about pricing in 2 different threads huh LOL

i had a shoot this past sunday, 11 person family shoot, 30 hi res images with a print release form(i know im fuckin myself doing that, from now on im doing prints, no print releases) and half the family had something come up so i only had 6 people and cut my price in half. that hurt when it came to paying bills that are due on the 1st of the month but thats the exact reason why depending on photography to pay bills it is nothing but a dream!

To add to the debate of the $500 photographer, is that noobs come along, buy a DSLR, and steal jobs from people who have dedicated their lives to photography. It's these people undercharging, that cause everyone to lower their prices, even the people how ONLY get money from phtography, because these noobs who have day jobs, are just "making change on the side" and they're normally no where near as good, but the cheapo bride agrees anyway thinking she won't be able to tell the difference, then the bride gets all pissy when the noob accidentally had AF off for the first kiss, or for the cake sharing, or that he underexposed the veil reveal. All of this could've been avoided if Joe Schmoe just didn't tackle the big dog's work in the first place, and stuck to taking photos for friends and such. I mean if someone comes to me asking for pictures of something, I'll ask if they are going to pay a little something to make it worth my trouble, MUCH less than what a professional would charge, but if the event they want me to cover is serious, I advise they just skip me all together and go to a professional.

Here is why other people undercharging themselves can give the skilled people a lack of payment they deserve.

Welcome to free market economy dude. theres nothing in the rulebooks that says if im almost as good, as good, or better than someone else, that i have to charge more than they do

    Contradicts what you said above

Like I said in another thread. There are too many "pro photographers" (not naming names)bitching and complaining about what people can and cant do and what this is and what that isn't, with their "Holyer than thou" attitudes. I see too much negativlely driven critisizm and patronizing than positive constructive encouragement. Instead of wasting all your energy making threads about what and who a "photographer" is, or what a "photoshoot" isn't, geared towards belittling the people who post pictures they took of their car, or the woods behind their house with a point and shoot, use some of that energy and make a thread on how to IMPROVE your images with a flash, or how to take stunning infrared images.

Because it really bothers me, seeing the guys that come in here posting the pics they thought up, then executed, then edited and posted in this forum, and they gain a little sense of pride knowing the work, however shitty, or great it may be, that they accomplished, then to hear them say "...but by no means am i a photographer" based on what other "pro photographers" have said on this forum. WTF? Did you see an image in your head, then use your camera to take it and plot that image onto your computer screen or on a piece of paper? By all means, thats a photographer.

Damn hotshot, get a little butt hurt there? And by all means you have some names, name them cause I don't know anybody on here who claims to be "pro", maybe "semi-pro."

And for the record, 90% of the photos posted on here were not thought up and executed but rather shot on the fly. There is a ton more to a photo than just snapping it which is why most say "I am by no means a photographer". As for the constructive feedback, get on a real photography site and get the feedback. I only know a couple photogs on here (not me as I do not shoot cars unless a model is involved) that could give feedback that would help and they won't do it. The few times they did they got slammed for it or the OP didn't want to hear it.

There's a lot of jargon involved with photography that most people don't understand. The term professional is extremely skewed as it does not reflect skill. I own DSLR, but I would never take the burden of the main photographer at whatever event I attend, nor do I charge. I am a hobbyist, nothing more.

Although one picture I took was on the cover of a well-known company's monthly newsletter.
